Just bought a small farm and thinking of starting with Texel sheep. Any tips on getting started?

Welcome to the world of farming, GamerDude82! Texels are a great choice, especially for meat quality. Start by checking local regulations and sourcing quality breeding stock.

Absolutely, starting with high-quality stock is crucial. Make sure the sheep have access to good forage and clean water. Texels are hearty but thrive in good conditions.

Does anyone have experience with Texels in colder climates? I’m in the northern US and curious how they fare.

They originally come from the harsh conditions of the Texel islands in the Netherlands, so they do quite well in cold weather, as long as they have adequate shelter.

Thanks for the insights! What about feeding? Any particular supplements needed?

Texels are pretty good with basic pasture and hay during the winter. Supplements depend on your soil and pasture quality, but a mineral block is usually a good start.

Thinking about crossbreeding Texels with another breed to enhance wool quality. Any recommendations?

Crossbreeding Texels can be tricky since they're primarily meat sheep. Maybe consider a breed like Merinos for better wool but keep an eye on how it affects meat quality.

Interesting point about crossbreeding. I might look into that as well. Has anyone seen a notable difference in flock management with crossbred sheep?

Appreciating all this great advice! How often do Texels need health checks?

Regular health checks are key, especially for parasites and hoof health. I check my flock at least once every quarter and more frequently during lambing season.

This has been really helpful, thanks everyone! I’m looking to visit some Texel farms nearby to get a firsthand look. Anyone from the Ohio area here?
