Just came back from a weekend in Giethoorn and was absolutely enchanted by the canals and lack of roads! Has anyone else visited this 'Dutch Venice'?
I live in the Netherlands but only visited Giethoorn recently. It's surreal to walk around a village with no cars at all, just boats and bikes! Did you rent a boat?
Yes, we rented an electric boat to explore the canals. It's the best way to see the village! So peaceful and scenic, especially early in the morning.
Sounds lovely! I’m planning a trip there next spring. Any tips for first-timers?
Definitely try to go on a weekday if possible. Weekends can get quite crowded with tourists, which might take away from the tranquility a bit.
Good to know! How about places to eat? Any recommendations?
There are some great little cafes and restaurants along the main canal. The local pannenkoeken (pancakes) are a must-try!
Anyone have any recommendations for eco-friendly accommodations in Giethoorn?
I stayed in a lovely bed and breakfast that focused on sustainability. They use local products and have measures to conserve energy and water. I’ll drop you the name in a message!
That’s awesome! It’s great to see more places focusing on sustainable tourism. Giethoorn really is a unique gem.
Absolutely! And if you're into photography, the picturesque bridges and traditional thatched-roof houses make for stunning photos.
Thanks for all the great advice, everyone! Really excited to experience the quiet charm of Giethoorn for myself.
